I just got a collection letter. Will Sky Blue validate the debt?
We offer debt validation as a standard part of our credit repair services. There are no extra charges for this, and we encourage our customers to forward to us any collection notices they receive as quickly as possible. There are several benefits to debt validation, but not all debts should be validated.
The Benefits
There are several benefits to debt validation. If the collector does not own the debt, or if they do not have proof of their legal right to collect, or if they cannot account properly for the amount they claim, they must stop collecting. If they have not reported to the bureaus, they must not report, and if they have, they must withdraw their account at once.
Other Reasons to Validate
Eliminating the collection is a nice credit repair goal, but there are other reasons to validate as well. Even if you recognize the debt and plan to pay it, we suggest that you let us validate it for you. Your good intentions are commendable, but you would not want to pay a debt, and later discover that the collector you paid did not own it.
Do Not Overpay
There is nothing more upsetting that getting a collection letter for a debt that you paid to a different collector. In addition, debt validation can help eliminate the possibility that you are paying an excessive amount. There are many cases where collectors reduce the balance for lack of proper account documentation.
When You Want to Stay Off the Radar
Lastly, not all debt should be validated. As part of our credit repair service, before sending a validation letter we will always research the statute of limitation and speak with you about the debt. If there is a chance that validation could trigger a lawsuit, or if you do not have the financial resources to confront a collector, you might decide to stay off their radar screen until you are prepared.
