You will need to get your credit reports at the outset of your credit repair program. There are several ways to do this, all of which vary in price and difficulty.
Credit Repair Companies Can Not Run Credit
Some credit repair services may offer to run your credit reports for you, which can be convenient, but there are two problems. If a credit repair company runs your credit it will have a negative impact on your credit score. In our opinion this is an inappropriate start to any credit repair program. Another problem with credit repair companies running your credit is the clear violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by the very people that are supposed to understand it the best.
Permissible Purposes
The FCRA, in no uncertain terms prohibits the sale of credit reports to third parties except for very specific “permissible purposes”. Section 604 of the FCRA defines these “permissible purposes” as including credit and insurance underwriting, employment and rental screening, as well as for court ordered cases. Additional FTC Staff Opinion Letters emphasize the strict intent of the law.
Get Your Reports Yourself
Get your credit reports yourself. There are a myriad of ways to do this. The site designed to be the hub for government mandated free credit reports is AnnualCreditReport.com. This is the only place to get your reports for free, with no strings attached. There are many companies that offer excellent three-in-one reports at no charge if you join their monthly monitoring service.
Getting Your Reports with Real FICO Scores
If you want to start your credit repair program with your reports and your genuine credit scores you will need to go to MyFico.com. Keep in mind that the scores offered by the three credit bureaus are their own proprietary scores and are not comparable with the genuine FICO scores used by lenders.
