Is there any point to continuing to dispute an issue with the credit bureaus once they verify it? There are errors on my report that were verified, should I give up?
A lot of people managing their own credit repair give up when they get a verification letter from the credit bureaus. A verification letter from one of the credit bureaus should not be perceived as the end of the road. If you believe that you are in the right you should continue your credit repair effort. In fact, statistically, more issues are corrected as the result of subsequent dispute letters than from the initial attempt.
Frivolous Letters
In addition to verification letters the credit bureaus may send a different type of response known as a “frivolous letter” stating that they feel that your dispute is frivolous. The letter may even specifically indicate that you should cease disputing the issue. Again, if you feel that you are in the right you should continue disputing the item as part of your credit repair effort. It is extremely effective to respond directly to an unsatisfactory response by attaching the verification or frivolous letter and addressing your dissatisfaction clearly and demanding that the issue be researched.
The Credit Bureau Perspective
From the perspective of the credit bureaus dispute processing is a high cost, zero benefit task. The bureaus are legally obligated to manage the influx of credit repair letters. Their responsibilities are spelled out by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. But the responsibility is taken on begrudgingly at best. It is clear to us that dispute processing is handled in the most expeditious way possible, with a bias towards minimal effort. Where it is possible to dismiss a dispute as frivolous that is how it will be handled. Any credit repair effort, if it is to be successful, must anticipate a degree of resistance and adjust accordingly.
Persistence Pays!
In short, don’t give up when you encounter resistance. Do not be discouraged or take a verification letter personally. The credit bureaus process millions of credit repair letters daily and you should expect that a certain percentage of your communications will not be handled to your satisfaction. Just preserver and you will be rewarded. When it comes to credit repair persistence pays!
