Can credit report repair work with consumer credit counseling or a debt settlement program?
It is possible to dovetail credit repair services with consumer credit counseling or debt settlement, but it must be done with care and the benefit will normally be limited to issues with accounts that are not included in your repayment program.
Errors Happen
While you are in consumer credit counseling or a debt settlement program the payments on all of the accounts included in your program will be managed by a third party. This third party will distribute an agreed upon amount to each of the creditors. In most cases this amount will be less than the original amount due. Because of this the creditor may report your payments as late each month. In many cases, as part of the agreement with the company managing your payment, the creditor will consent to suspend derogatory reporting while you are in the program, but this does not always work.
Start the Clean Up
Once your consumer credit counseling or debt settlement program is complete you can examine your reports for errors. This is the best time to start your credit repair services. If reporting on the accounts was not handled properly, or according to the agreement that the creditor had with your repayment program, the errors should be corrected with credit repair.
